I’m Off to War

Prisoners come and go
through the city of Aragon,
every one of them who has a son
is sent off to war.

There was an old man
eighty-two years of age,
who blessed the wine and bread
and presented it before the Lord,
cursing his wife whom had
birthed seven daughters
and not a single son.

The youngest daughter speaks out:
'Don't curse my birth,
don't curse it, father,
give me weapons and a horse,1
I will go off to war!'.

'Your features, daughter,
are not that of a man'
'My features, father,
will be darkened by the sun!'.

'Your hair, daughter,
is not that of a man'
'My hair, father,
I will cover with a hat'.

'Your chest, daughter,
is not that of a man'
'My chest, father,
I will cover with a hat'.

She took weapons and a horse
and departed to war,
[while] waging war and fighting,
her hat fell off.

A kid goat my father has purchased
for two zuzzim, for two zuzzim
and then came the cat and it ate the kid

My golden Sarajevo*

Terrified, I watch the television,
my golden is being destroyed.
I never thought it would be true,
so much inhumanity and terrible cruelty.

What's being done by its citizens,
they were once friends and good neighbors1.
Cruel politics has destroyed everything,
it completely changes people.

Divine angels, where are you now
on this truly terrible hour?
Eight years ago I was born in Sarajevo,
from childhood I lived my entire life there.

I remember the readings2 Daniel,
the first alef-bet3 I learned from him.
At home we used Spanish,
with friends we spoke our own4 in school.

From Spain we brought with us culture and tradition,
the language and romances we cultivated with our hearts.
If the State of Israel didn't exist,
I don't know how the Jewish people would survive.

We send many thanks to God Almighty
for creating our glorious country for the third time.
Divine angels, where are you now
on this truly terrible hour?

A vicious love

A strong love
is a burning and strong love,
it faces you
like a killer.

Be careful,
take a look at what you have.

I passed by your door

I passed by your door
I found that it was closed,
I kissed the lock
the way I'd kiss your face.

I was born a beautiful girl
I am pursued by young men,
and my mother has let me
do whatever I please.

I passed by your door
I saw you in the orchard,
I asked you for a rose
you said 'none are in bloom'.

I passed by your door
with all of my friends,
I stood by your window
playing the mandolin.

I stood by your door
with stalks of rue,
your mother came out and said:
'I have no beautiful daughter'.

You're so beautiful
and you have no honesty,
if you decide to give me millions
my people don't want it/you.

No mother, I don't want that

'My daughter, I will give you a wealthy man'
- no mother, I don't want that
for he is wealthy and out of my reach,
no mother, I don't want that.

'My daughter, I will give you a poor man'
- no mother, I don't want that
for he is poor, very poor
no mother, I don't want that.

'My daughter, I will give you a jealous man'
- no mother, I don't want that
with a jealous man I will never be able to rest,
no mother, I don't want that.

'My daughter, I will give you a drunkard'
- I want that mother, I want that
I'm already in the embrace of that drunkard
I want that mother, I want that.

Oh, for nine months

Oh, for nine months you have been with child,
a fair faced son was born to you,
this, this child is a good sign.

When the midwife says: push, push
and the mother says: God, help me!
and her family says: amen, amen, amen.

The father comes with his guests
and in his hand he holds a fish
and for his wife he brings many good gifts.

This, this child is a good sign.

Up, my love

Up, my love, it is already day!
I cannot open to you, my handsome love.
At night I do not sleep, thinking of you.

My father is reading, he will hear us.
Put out the light and he will sleep.
Put out the light and he will lie down again.

My mother is sewing, she will hear us.
Hide the needle and she will sleep.
Hide the needle and she will sleep.

My brother is writing, he will hear us.
Hide the pen and he will sleep.
